WINES FOR EASTER DINNER
We recommend Bordeaux, Rioja or Barolo from better vintages as this is not the time to be miserly. Here are a few suggestions all of which will pair well with tenderloin or lamb.
2003 Chatuea Les Haut de Pontet Canet Pauillac Bordeaux, Fr.- “Lots of currants, minerals and lightly toasted oak. Full-bodied, with lots of clean fruit and superfine tannins. Excellent for a second wine. Best after 2009. 5,830 cases made.†(WS 3/31/06) $65.95
2009 Larose-Trintaudon Haut Medoc, Bordeaux, Fr. – (60% Cabernet Sauvignon & 40% Merlot) “This has always been one of the more widely available cru bourgeois in the United States, & the 09 is a particularly attractive and charming wine, with fragrant strawberry and black cherry fruit as well as hints of wood smoke and spice box. It is medium-bodied, soft, silky and ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years.â€(WA #199) $23.95
2009 Chateau Malmaison Moulis Bordeaux, France - “This has a good sappy feel, with kirsch and cherry preserves flavors laced with a pepper note and a lively tobacco streak. Shows a stony edge on the finish. Drink now through 2015. 9,500 cases made.†(WS 5/31/12) $25.95
2010 La Tour de Mons Margaux, Bordeaux, France- “Attractive floral notes intermixed with some blueberry, raspberry and loamy soil notes are followed by an elegant medium-bodied wine with sweet fruit, attractive texture & up-front drinkability. This wine should be consumed over the next decade.†WA #205 $38.95
2001 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904, Rioja, Spain – “Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Upon release it should continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and drink well through 2040. Drink: 2010 – 2040†(WA #189) $54.95
2005 Roagna Barolo Vigna Rionda Piedmont, Italy-“Roagna’s 2005 Barolo Vigna Rionda is a sweet, exotic and totally sensual Barolo loaded with class. The wine offers outstanding length and finessed, silky tannins with compelling inner perfume and tons of elegance. The finish is gorgeous. I also tasted an old-vines Riserva (still in cask) that is highly promising. For now, readers who want to experience the legendary Vigna Rionda magic will be thrilled by this exceptional Barolo.†(WA #185) $69.95
2009 LACIMA RIBEIRA SACRA
In the rugged hills of Ribeira Sacra, located in Spain’s green corner, the primary grape is mencia and among the best expressions of that place and grape is the 2009 Lacima. The balanced, seemingly impossible blend of smoky meat juice and spice with ripe fruit is just perfect and one of the best wines I have had this year. Try it with roasted chicken, pork chops, tenderloin and anything with mushrooms. Here is a review from Tanzer:
2009 Dominio Do Bibei Lacima Ribeira Sacra - (a blend of 85% mencia and 15% brancellao) “Vivid red. More deeply pitched than the Lalama, offering fresh cherry and black raspberry scents with hints of smoky minerals, violet and licorice. Zesty mineral and peppery spice notes add bite to sweet dark fruit flavors, which pick up a blood orange nuance with air. Closes sappy, spicy and long, leaving a sexy floral note behind.†(IWCSep/Oct 13) $64.95
“Traipsing the Terroir of Nebbioloâ€
Asimov’s piece last week in the NYT with the same title as above reminded us about just how much we like Nebbiolo grown slightly north of the Piedmont, where cooler weather produces a more elegant, approachable wine than Barolo or Barbaresco. These are wines we like to call Nebbiolo for the rest of us.
2008 Ferrando Carema Etichetta Carema, Piedmont, Italy-“wafts from the glass with sweet dried cherries, tobacco, sweet herbs and crushed flowers. A mid-weight, delicate wine, the 2008 is quite typical of these hillside vineyards. In 2008 the acidity is a bit on the high side, which readers should keep in mind when considering food pairings. This is a gorgeous wine from Ferrando. Drink: 2013-23.†(WA#203) $45.95
2006 Monsecco DOCG Gattinara – One of the more famous Nebbiolo DOCG’s, this has wonderful approachable elegance. It is the number 3 wine on Asimov’s list described as “Bright yet rich, with classic, lingering aromas and flavors and fine tannins.†$45.95
2008 Caves Donnas Donnas Val D Aosta, Italy - From elevations ranging 1300 to 1700 feet, with dark cherries, earth and spice notes, fresh and medium bodied. A bit of leather and tobacco. $45.95
2009 Proprieta Sperino Costa della Sesia UvaggioPiedmont, Italy-“The 2009 Uvaggio boasts compelling inner sweetness and layers of perfumed fruit. This is an especially juicy, radiant wine for this part of northern Piedmont, but at the same time, the trademark Lessona acidity keeps things in check. Sweet floral notes resonate on the finish. This is pure class and elegance. What an impressive wine. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019.†(WA 203) $36.95
