A TASTE OF RHONE
We’ll explore the terroir of the Rhone and taste some examples of winter weight red wines from the region. A one hour educational program, limited to eight people and held in our fine wine room. Because the demand has been so great we are doing the class twice in JANUARY – FRIDAY & SATURDAY , JANUARY 16th and 17th from 5:30 to 6:30pm –– There is a $5 per person class fee and availability is on a first come first serve basis but you can call and reserve spaces at any time. (A great idea for your group as a prelude to dinner.)
COLGIN – Perfect California Cabernet Blends
“Owned by Ann Colgin and her husband Joe Wender, Colgin is one of the reference points for just what heights mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux varietals … can achieve in Napa Valley.” RP
2006 Colgin IX Proprietary Red Estate (Napa Valley Ca.)– “From the Pritchard Hill Vineyard, the 2006 is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases of this cuvee. It, too, reveals the noble sweetness of tannin, the extraordinary rich, intense mouthfeel, and sumptuous aromas of flowers, burning embers, blackberries, blueberries, spice box, and cedar. With extraordinary intensity, beautiful purity, a texture and flavors that build incrementally on the palate, & a significantly long finish, this is a perfect wine.” (WA #180) $649.95
2009 Colgin IX Proprietary Red Estate (Napa Valley Ca.) – “Composed of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2009 IX Estate exhibits a flowery bouquet with notes of subtle smoke, blackberries, black currants, kirsch and baking spices. Rich, deep and full-bodied, this voluptuous, sensational blend boasts an inky/purple color. While approachable, it should hit its stride in 4-5 years and last for two to three decades.” (WA #209) $499.95
TAYLOR FLADGATE – “CENTURY OF PORT”
One 375ml. bottle each of 10, 20, 30 and 40 year port, thus the name “Century of Port”
Taylor Fladgate is one of the last Port houses to make 30 and 40 aged tawny’s and this set, in a presentation case, is a great opportunity to see the differences of wood aged port where decades of evaporation and ageing in wood have concentrated these wines almost to an essence, producing intense and complex nutty and spicy aromas and a dense and concentrated palate full of rich mellow flavor. $259.95
TWO of OUR VERY FAVORITE WHITE WINES
2013 Thomas-Labaille Sancerre “Les Monts Damnés” (Loire Valley, Fr.) - From 30 year old vines in Sancerre’s most esteemed vineyard site this is a terrific example of what Sancerre should be: rich, fat, round, with layered aromas, a subtle nose and a wonderful laser like mineral finish. This is a wine that you can enjoy now but it has the bones to age and develop nicely for several years. $29.95
2013 Guillemot-Michel Vire-Clesse (Macon Fr) - Biodynamically farmed for 20 years this estate is located in the commune of Quintaine, adjacent to the village of Clessé, south of Burgundy. Quintaine is recognized as producing some of the finest wines in the Mâconnais, having a special microclimate caused by the close proximity of the Saone River. While the wine is unaoaked it does go through 100% Malolactic fermentation and this, combined with the microclimate, gives the wine a certain richness and ripeness showing pineapple and tropical fruit flavors with fresh minerality on a long finish. $34.95
NEW ARRIVALS
and a special purchase = a great deal on Estate Grown Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.
2006 Verbena Riserva Brunello di Montalcino, (Montelcino, Italy)- “A pretty and lusciously layered Brunello with dark fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and rum cake aromas. The wine is dense and chewy, with a tight, velvety feel. Dark fruit and spice push the wine across the palate, and both the acidity and tannins are softer than in other 2006 riservas.” (WE 5/1/12) $74.95
2007 Vietti Villero Riserva Castiglione Falletto, Barolo ( Italy) – “The 2007 Barolo Riserva Villero is a flat out stunner. Dark red fruit, Villero spices, leather, tobacco, smoke and menthol come alive in a rich, sensual Barolo that captures the essence of this site. Rose petals, mint and sweet red berries flesh out on an inviting wine loaded with class and personality. Over time, the powerful, explosive style of the year becomes more evident. The fruit turns darker, more balsamic and also more intensely mineral.” - AG Vinous. $329.95
2009 Concha Y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon (Puente, Chile) –“This muscular red packs a mélange of roasted plum, cassis and macerated wild berry on a full-bodied frame. There’s plenty of fresh acidity and tannic structure, as the long finish unwinds with layers of maduro tobacco and humus, with a grace note of wild flowers. Best from 2014 through 2020. 10,000 cases made.’ (WS 3/31/2013) $74.95
2011 Ancient Peaks Cabernet Sauvignon, Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles, CA.
This estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon from Margarita Vineyard (soon to be a separate AVA ) opens with generous aromas of black fruit, toasty oak, caramel and cedar. The palate is elegantly layered with flavors of plum, cherry and blackberry, followed by trailing notes of black olive and cocoa. Fine tannins linger on a juicy, structured finish. The wine is aged 16 months in American and French Oak but it is very well integrated into the wine.
Our usual price is $19.95/bt/ but, it is now $16.95/btl while supplies last!
