JUNE “SHORT SIPS” CLASS
RIESLING – World’s greatest and most misunderstood wine grape
Riesling is one of only two noble white wine grapes and we will taste and discuss a variety of German Rieslings. Hurry because this class fills up quick!! (Wishful thinking.) A one hour educational program, limited to eight people and held in our fine wine room. Offered twice on FRIDAY or SATURDAY, June 12th and 13th from 5:30 to 6:30pm. There is a $5 class fee and availability is on a first come first serve basis. Call 285-8011 to reserve space.
2007 CASTELLO di LUCIGNANO CHIANTI CLASSICO
Two years ago we offered this wine, same vintage, as part of our monthly case and it was very popular. We learned that the distributer just purchased the last few cases of ’07 and is offering a volume deal and we are happy to pass along the savings.
2007 Castello di Lucignano Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Italy) - From a good vintage for Classico with aromas of red fruit softened with hints of vanilla and oak. Good structure, with soft tannins and well balanced acidity. Regular price is $16.95 During June the price will be: $14.39/ btl. No further discounts.
The ROSÉ REPORT
Rosé-a-Palozza was a huge success (thank you) and while there were many crowd favorites one wine in the value/quality category was so well received we bought enough to offer a discount during the month of June.
2014 Bodegas Martínez Lacuesta Rioja Rosé, Spain – “Light, bright orange. Ripe red berries and a hint of cherry pit on the nose. Lush and open-knit, offering slightly warm raspberry and cherry pit flavors and a hint of bitter orange pith. Picks up a peppery element with air and finishes with good bite and decent persistence.” (Vinous Apr 2015) REGULAR PRICE: $9.95 ON SALE IN JUNE: $7.95 (no further discounts.)
NEW ROSÉ ARRIVALS
2014 Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Rosé, France – “Vivid orange-pink. Pungent, mineral-accented aromas of fresh cherry and redcurrant, along with hints of rose oil and orange zest. Sappy and precise on the palate, with juicy acidity giving spine and lift to concentrated red fruit and floral pastille flavors. Smoothly plays power off of finesse and finishes stony and very long, with excellent clarity and thrust.” (Vinous 4/ 2015) $26.95
2014 Château de Roquefort Corail Côtes de Provence Rosé – “Pale orange. Ripe red berries, orange pith and dried rose on the deeply pitched nose, with a peppery element adding lift. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering spicy red and dark berry flavors and a hint of bitter herbs. Weighty but surprisingly lithe, finishing with good cling and a lingering orange note.” (Vinous Apr 2015) $17.95
2014 Domaine de Bagnol Cassis Rosé- “Bright pink. Racy, mineral-inflected red berry, citrus zest and floral aromas show excellent clarity and a hint of musky garrigue. Dry, fleshy and focused on the palate, delivering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a bracing kick of orange rind. This very suave wine shows a deft blend of power and finesse on the long, floral finish.” (Vinous Apr 2015) $29.95
NEW ARRIVALS
2010 Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Valmur Grand Cru, France – “Bright pale yellow. Spicy, high-pitched aromas of peach, crushed stone, quinine and wild herbs. Concentrated, vibrant and sharply delineated, conveying a strong soil character to the high-pitched citrus, floral and mineral flavors. Lovely harmonious acidity contributes to the wine’s impression of energy. The long, rising, perfumed finish is suave and fine-grained.” (IWC Jul 2012) $74.95
2010 Castello La Leccia Bruciagna Gran Selezione Sangiovese (Chianti Classico), Italy - “Aromas of Mediterranean herb, balsam, eucalyptus and dark berry lead the nose. The firm, elegant palate delivers juicy black cherry, dried blackberry, black pepper, clove, thyme, orange peel and anisette alongside youthfully austere but fine-grained tannins. Let this wine develop. Drink 2017–2022.” (WE 7/15) $44.95
2013 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Peters Vineyard Sonoma Coast. Ca – “The 2013 Pinot Noir Peters Vineyard is impeccable in its balance of fruit, acidity and aromatics. Crushed flowers, mint, dried cherries and pine form an attractive tapestry of aromas, flavors and textures, especially through the mid-palate and finish, where the wine offers lovely density. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Floral, lifted notes from the 40-50% whole clusters add considerable nuance. Today, the Peters is super-expressive, but my sense is that it will continue to improve.” (Vinous Jan 2015) $47.95
TWO YOU SHOULD TRY
2013 Domaine Philémon Jurançon Noir Côtes du Tarn, France – An intriguing red bottled under cap; Jurançon Noir is an almost forgotten grape varietal from the Gaillac region of southwestern France. Bright, tart and rustic with earth and cherry flavors it will appeal to lovers of Loire Valley cabernet franc. $10.95
2010 Pietra Santa Sangiovese (Cienega Valley) – While I sometimes think of Pietra Santa as a bit of a grocery store winery; this interesting Sangiovese fits nicely between California ripe and Tuscan bright. It looks and tastes like Sangiovese, with aromas of leather and bright red fruits and flavors of raspberry and tar, but it all comes across a bit softer and riper than Tuscany. Next time you want a Chianti – try this wine instead. $17.95
